So THAT was what F1 meant!

Singapore GP - the race of the season?

After watching the Singapore GP, I get it now!

With the changes rolled out for the start of the 2022 season to make racing closer, it seemed like the only actual change was replacing Mercedes dominance with Red Bull.

‘Oh but the midfield is much closer, there is more overtaking!’ Yes, while this is true, does anyone really care?

But on Sunday in Singapore, I think we finally saw what the decision-makers in F1 had envisioned - an edge of your seat battle for the lead in the closing laps that made you not want to blink in case you missed something.

The race was a bit of a slow-burn, we had the intrigue in the opening stages of whether or not Max Verstappen would be able to slice his way through the field.

I for one thought he was going to be right in the mix and keep his streak alive - until the safety car ruined the Red Bull strategy.

Then the Lap 43 Virtual Safety Car really threw the cat amongst the pigeons, and for the first time since 2021, I was leaning forward in my seat watching every twist and turn.

And while I would have loved to see Lando Norris come through for the win, it was a tactical masterclass from Carlos Sainz that earned him a well-deserved victory.

So, what happens next?

Will it be back to ‘business at usual’ for Red Bull this weekend in Japan?

Or will we see another thriller like Singapore?

Lewis Hamilton made a fair point, when he mentioned that Red Bull would have stopped developing their 2023 car to focus on their 2024 car as both championships are already in the bag, while the rest of the teams are closing the gap by continuing to bring upgrades.

Makes sense when you think about it.

If we get a race half as good as Singapore, and with the Red Bull’s in the mix, it will really set the scene for more surprises and excitement as the season reaches its conclusion - and it will get our hopes up for a closer season in 2024!
