Brazil will always mean Senna
Despite both championships being stitched up and Max Verstappen likely heading for another easy Sunday afternoon drive, I’m genuinely excited for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Mexico was (in my book) excellent to watch because it had a bit of everything. And as a McLaren fan, that drive from Lando was something special. His best in F1? Probably…
But when I think of Brazil, I think of Ayrton Senna.
Senna is the reason I got into watching F1 as a kid, and after he died, I lost my passion for the sport. Thankfully it came back in the early 2000’s, but ever since, it has just never felt quite the same to me.
So for me, one of the best things about the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend is all the Senna content that comes out, meaning hours of watching, reading, and reminiscing.
My personal favourite F1 race (of all time) to watch over and over is that 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix.
And just between you and me, I have been known to shed the odd tear on occasion 😭
While all the normal highlights are readily available, this fascinating chat between Senna TV and a Brazilian journalist who saw the race in-person is one of my favourites. Over 30 years later, he still talks about it like it was yesterday.
Looking ahead to this weekend, we have more Fast Facts about Brazil, where Verstappen can also set the record for the most podiums in a season.
And as always, Pirelli’s Mario Isola talks us through the tyres:
I’d also love to take a moment to thank everyone who took time to reply to my last email asking if F1 fans had gone too far by booing at the US GP. We had some great conversations, I learned a lot, and got to understand a lot more about what happened from people who were either at the track or have a better understanding than I did.
So if you have a favourite Senna memory, let’s keep the conversation going!
Lastly I’d like to thank this weeks sponsor, The GIST Sports News. This is a 4x-weekly newsletter that gives you "the gist" of what's going on in the sports world covering both men’s and women’s sports, but as a female-led publication, has a strong focus on supporting women in sport.
Enjoy the racing this weekend,
Jarrod
